Designing for Everyone: Why We Doubled Down on Menu Accessibility
How an ADA lawsuit inspired us to overhaul Meteor Mega Menus, making it more accessible and compliant (WCAG 2.2 Level AA) for all Shopify merchants and their customers.
Designing for Everyone: Why We Doubled Down on Menu Accessibility
For over a decade, Meteor Mega Menus has helped Shopify merchants build beautiful, organized navigation. But recently, a long-time user reached out with a high-stakes challenge: they were facing a lawsuit regarding ADA compliance.
It was a wake-up call. Although Meteor has been a staple on the App Store for 10+ years, this was the first time a merchant’s legal standing depended directly on our code. We did not just want to patch a hole; we wanted to ensure that every merchant using Meteor Mega Menus was protected and that their customers, regardless of how they browse, had a first-class experience.
Beyond the checkbox: Real-world compliance
Accessibility (often referred to as A11y) is not just a legal hurdle. It is about reaching the 25% of adults who live with a disability. When your menu is not accessible, you are effectively locking your front door to as much as a quarter of your potential customers.
To support our merchants, we updated Meteor to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. This is the standard most often cited in ADA legal proceedings for e-commerce.
What makes a menu accessible?
It is more than just alt-text on images. We have baked several core features into Meteor to ensure it works seamlessly with assistive technologies:
- Keyboard navigation: Not everyone uses a mouse. Users can navigate every level of your menu using only the Tab, Enter, Arrow, and Esc keys.
- Screen reader precision: Using semantic HTML and ARIA labels, we ensure screen readers correctly announce when a menu is "expanded" or "collapsed."
- Visible focus states: We provide clear visual outlines so keyboard users never lose track of where they are on the page.
- 400% zoom support: To assist users with low vision, our menus support significant zooming without breaking the layout or functionality.
A partnership in compliance
When the stakes are high, you need a partner who moves fast. Here is how that experience felt for the merchant involved:
"Helium went above and beyond to implement ADA compliance changes to the menu on a super short timeline. Our menu is now compliant thanks to them!"

Documentation for your peace of mind
If you are an enterprise merchant or simply want to keep your legal team happy, we provide a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This document outlines exactly how Meteor conforms to WCAG 2.2 standards.

Your store, accessible to all
While Meteor handles the heavy lifting for your navigation, remember that overall compliance also depends on how you configure the app, your theme, and general store settings.
